Millets and health
What are millets?
Millets are small-seeded, traditional grains such as ragi (finger millet, kezhvaragu), kambu (pearl millet), thinai (foxtail), saamai (little), varagu (kodo), kuthiraivali (barnyard), panivaragu (proso) and cholam (sorghum). In Tamil they are called siruthaniyam. They are naturally gluten-free and richer in fibre and minerals than polished rice.
Are millets good for people with diabetes?
Millets can be part of a diabetes-friendly diet. A 2021 ICRISAT-led review of 65 human studies found millets have an average glycemic index of about 52.7, around 36% lower than milled rice and refined wheat, and regular intake lowered fasting blood sugar in people with diabetes. Portion size and how food is cooked still matter, so please follow your doctor’s advice. Our products are foods, not medicines.
Which millet is best for weight loss?
No single millet is best; foxtail (thinai), little (saamai), kodo (varagu) and barnyard (kuthiraivali) millets are popular choices because they are high in fibre, which helps you feel full for longer. Weight loss depends on your total diet and activity, so choose millet foods as a replacement for refined snacks, not as an addition.
Are millets healthier than rice?
Compared with polished white rice, most millets have more dietary fibre, protein and minerals such as iron, calcium (especially ragi) and magnesium, and a lower glycemic index. Many families get the best results by replacing part of their daily rice or refined snacks with millets.
Can I eat millets every day?
Yes, most people can eat millets every day as part of a balanced diet. It is good to rotate between different millets and drink enough water, because millets are high in fibre. People with thyroid conditions or kidney issues should check with their doctor about the right amount.
Are millets gluten-free?
Millets are naturally gluten-free. However, some of our products contain other ingredients, and all are made in a facility that may handle wheat. If you follow a strict gluten-free diet, please check the ingredient list on each product page before buying.
Why do millet snacks cost more than regular snacks?
Millets are grown in smaller quantities than rice and wheat, need extra cleaning and processing, and we make our products in small batches with ingredients like jaggery instead of cheaper refined alternatives. You pay for the ingredients, not for fillers.
Kids and family
Are your snacks suitable for children?
Yes, our snacks are made for families and are a popular choice for school tiffin boxes, and they are never oil fried. Our chikki and crunchy snacks are not suitable for children under 3 years because of choking risk. Our products are made in a facility that also processes milk and nuts.
My family doesn’t like the taste of millets. Will they like these?
Most first-time customers are surprised. Our snacks are made to taste like the traditional snacks families already enjoy, using roasted millets, jaggery, spices and nuts. Start with chikki or a mixed snack pack, or build your own box with smaller packs to try several flavours.
Can pregnant women eat millet products?
Millets such as ragi are commonly included in diets during pregnancy because they provide iron, calcium and fibre. Every pregnancy is different, so please confirm with your doctor, and check each product’s ingredients for anything you have been asked to avoid.
Products, ingredients and storage
Do your products contain maida, refined sugar or preservatives?
Ingredients differ from product to product, so please check the full ingredient list on each product page and on the pack, which is the final reference.
Do your products contain allergens?
Our products are manufactured in a facility that also processes milk and nuts, so any product may contain traces of milk or nuts, even if they are not listed as ingredients. If you have a milk or nut allergy, please check with us before ordering. Allergen information is shown on each product page and printed on the pack.
What is the shelf life of your products?
Shelf life depends on the product. The best-before date is printed on every pack and shown on each product page, so please check it for the item you are buying.
How should I store the products?
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. After opening, transfer to an airtight container or close the zip pouch tightly and finish within the time mentioned on the pack. Do not refrigerate dry snacks, as moisture can make them soft.
How do I use the health mix, malt and Saadha Podi?
Each product page has simple preparation steps. For malt and health mix, mix with hot water or milk and stir to make a drink or porridge. Saadha Podi is mixed with hot cooked rice and a little ghee or oil for a quick meal. Recipes are also on our blog.
